Does hypnosis work?

I’m often asked this question, “Does hypnosis work?” And the person asking often follows up with “My cousin/brother/friend gave up smoking with hypnosis”, proving they know it can work.

What they really want to know, of course, is “Will it work for me?” And that fear of it not working could be the very thing that gets in the way. Top sports-people have it drummed into them to focus on the outcome they want – its proven that this makes it far more likely to happen, simply because that’s where their energy and resources are being directed.

There are thousands of academic studies showing that hypnosis is a highly effective way of treating many conditions, both physical and psychological. People have dental work and invasive surgery using hypno-anaesthesia every day – mind-blowing, but true.

Hypnosis doesn’t carry a guarantee, because it isn’t done TO you, but with you. Part of the job of a trained hypnotherapist is helping their client remove any blocks that may be preventing them from getting the results they want.

So yes, hypnosis does work. Sometimes straight away, and sometimes after a little bit of groundwork to get stuff out of the way.

Hypnosis isn’t magic – but it can be magical.

Low self esteem

I just received an testimonial from a client I’ve seen about 8 times over the past year.  When I get letters like this it makes me so happy to know I’ve helped people to help themselves…

I went to see Ruth with issues of low self-esteem and guilt which effected my personal relationships, parenting and professional life as a performer.  Although I had understood and rationalised my patterns of behaviour they were still causing me frustration and pain.

What was fantastic about her approach was that she almost immediately enabled me to find both insight and practical methods to tackle the issues and their day-to-day manifestations. So I feel stronger and more equipped for life!

Ruth’s hypnosis and visualisation techniques helped me to really locate emotions that had been bottled up for many years…. then gently yet methodically we looked at painful and formative childhood experiences.  She helped me to face them with an adult’s strength and wisdom and enabled me to begin letting go of the root causes of my low self-esteem and guilt.

Ruth combines professionalism and empathy in equal proportion which made  me feel that I was in a safe place to work things out. She guided me rather than pushed me…  and ultimately although I acknowledge that I couldn’t have done it without her, I felt like I had drawn my own conclusions and had found new methods to face life’s challenges.

Thank you Ruth!

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a completely natural state. A hypnotherapist will teach you how to use it to great personal advantage.

The word hypnosis comes from the Greek word ‘Hypnos’ which means sleep. However this is a misnomer – we now know that hypnosis is a state of focused attention, not sleep. The old movies and cartoons that represented hypnosis as swinging watches and controlling people’s minds are also outdated.

In a Hypnotherapy session you are always in control and it is impossible to make you do anything against your wishes, morals or beliefs. A hypnotist merely helps to facilitate your experience of what is ultimately self-hypnosis.

Hypnosis is rather like daydreaming, or being totally involved in a film – many people describe it as the falling/floating feeling you get just as you fall asleep.

Research shows that the focused attention created by hypnosis also produces heightened suggestibility, which allows the hypnotherapist to make suggestions to your unconsious mind that help you make positive changes.
